No to graveyard shift

Came across an article on the relationship between cancer and night shifts in The Age a few days ago and thought it's worth sharing.

What caught my attention the most is that "The International Agency for Research on Cancer placed shift work in the same category as ultraviolet radiation, anabolic steroids and diesel engine exhaust in terms of cancer risk. The agency's Dr Vincent Cogliano said changes to sleep patterns caused by working nights could lower the body's production of melatonin. "Melatonin has some beneficial effects in preventing some of the steps leading to cancer," he said. "The evidence is really no different than it might be for an industrial chemical.""

sometimes we wonder how accurate this is. But then again, it is important to get adequate rest so that our body can recuperate itself and prepare for the next day!
